Trinidad & Tobago
The republic of Trinidad and Tobago is the Lesser Antilles' wild cousin, a country of deep
and abiding passion that is, in many ways, one of of the most complex in the chain. It's
a nation that has produced some of the world's most regonizable cultural icons; calypso
and steel pan bands are, today, nearly universal Caribbean sounds. Trindad's Carnival
outshines other island festivals in energy and pure bombast. Several world-eminent writers,
such as V.S. Naipaul, Samuel Selvon and poet-storyteller Paul Keens-Douglas, were
Trinidad-born. St. Lucian Nobel Prize-winner Derek Walcott established the Trinidad
Theatre Workshop in Port of Spain in 1959 and for years has made the country his
spiritual muse.
Country cousin Tobago, with its fine beaches, scuba diving and forest reserve, has become
the tourism center of the two islands, for Trindadians as well as for international
visitors. The island is quiet in its own way, small and navigable, a pearl of a getaway.
Tobago has gained a reputation over the years as an ecotourism center, and with some
justification. Highlights include hiking, some strenuous and some easy, through the
massive Tobago Forest Reserve at the island's center. Birdwatching at outlaying
island is popular, particularly at Little Tobago Island, a 250-acre bird sanctuary
off the northeast coast at Speyside. Small crowds assemble to observe leatherback
turtles laying eggs along the island's leeward coast beaches (April-Aug.).
Accommodations on the island are electic, from inexpensive guesthouse in Scarborough,
the island's capital, to luxury resorts along the coast
