St. Martin / St. Maarten
is not, unlike its Lesser Antilles neighbors
Antigua and
Barbuda, or
Trinidad and
Tobago,
two islands combined to form one nation, but rather two nations combined on one island.
The situation is unique in the region, to say the least. This 37-square-mile (96-square-km)
island has two names, two governments, three currencies, at least four languages, two
dominant cultures and even two electrical systems. Much on Saint Martin / Sint Maarten
can be recommended. Saint Martin / Sint Maarten is one of the Lesser Antilles' most
popular cruise ship stops, with about 180 calls per year. Some of the Lesser
Antilles' best resorts, restaurants, sports activities and shopping are found here,
but at a price. It is rarely a quiet place, but rather jamming, bustling and congested.
Local cultures have been nearly burried by the onslaught of tourism; even residents
you think are locals may be workers and business owners from other islands.
