St. Lucia
St. Lucia is a bit of an oddity, in a way. The island doesn't see the large numbers of tourist
that frequent nearby islands, and that seems to be a result of its slow awakening to the
power of tourism dollar. It is only in the past 15 years or so that St. Lucia has begun
actively trying to draw tourist to the island. So much the better; small crowds and often
rustic facilities make it more appealing to visitors in search of the Caribbean the way it
used to be. Which is not to say that luxury resorts and fine restaraunts are absent (they
are just low-key). St. Lucia interior is mountainous and lush, the result of eons of volcanic
activity; it is placed with walking trails and rainforest. The western leeward coast-the
center of tourism activity and where most of the population resides- is peppered with
small bays and pretty beaches. The roads are good and there is much to see off the
beaten path.
