St. Kitts & Nevis
St. Kitts figures prominently in the history of English colonization in the Lesser Antilles;
the first settlement was established on the island in 1623, and St. Kitts was used as
the base for further British colonization of neighboring islands. In fact, the
island was once called "Mother Colony of the West Indies." St. Kitts has been
linked to Nevis as an entity-first as a colony, then as a part of a tree-island
protectorate in association with Great Britian, and finally as an independent
federated state-for more than a century. There is an easy quality about Kittians.
It is the same lack of affection found the world over societies that live in
varying degrees of paradise and find the amazement of visitors hard to fathom.
However, islanders remain acutely aware of the vagaries, the down side, of
the tourism business. They're aware of the unbridled and ultimately unhealthy
development on neighboring island and are keeping it in check on their own.
One measure has been taken in that regard: by law, no building on the island
can be taller than the tallest palm tree.
