St. John
Many visitors express amazement when arriving in St. John's Cruz Bay by
ferry from St. Thomas. The short trip belies the difference between the two.
Whereas St. Thomas is a bustling tourism center, St. John (pop. 3,500) is
enveloped in the laid-back charm of a country estate. Missing are multistoried
resorts and the flash of high-energy tourism; yhey've been replaced by the
relaxed milieu of Cruz Bay and the natural environment of the rest of the
island, half of which is protected as part of the Virgin Islands National
Park. It is the park, established in 1956 and one of the oldest national
parks of the United States, that sets the tone for the island. The lush
inerior hosts dozen animal and plant species, some of which are found
nowhere but on St. John. Much is accessible by park-maintained walking
trails. The north coast is rife with comely beaches and bays, where snorkeling
is as good as it gets and the vistas from the island's North Shore Road
are beyond striking.
