St. Croix
St. Croix is somewhat removed from St. Thomas and St. John, in terms of both distance and
character. The island is located 40 miles (64 km) south of St. Thomas and, on a clear day,
visible through the haze from the highest points on St. Thomas and St. John. Due to its
former status as the premier plantation center of the old Danish West Indies and as the
first of the Virgin Islands sighted by Colombus during his second voyage to the West
Indies (he named it Santa Cruz), the flavor of the island is one of quiet, historical
encounters and laid-back shopping, dining and sightseeing. The fading yellow Danish
government buildings of Cristiansted speak volumes of the old days; most are on the
U.S. National Registry of Historic Places. The island towns themselves, Christiansted
and Frederiksted, are small jumbles of rarely crowed streets, easily navigated, with
side streets and alleys harboring shops and a small cafes.
