St. Barts
Saint-Barthélémy, more commonly known as St. Barth's or St. Barts, has for some time
been regarded by outsiders as a tony enclave of the ultrawealthy or at least ultrahip.
This has as much to do with its dominant French culture as with the attitude of the
island's hoteliers and restaurateurs. Small, exquisite and mostly tasteful, it seems,
have won out over large and blustery. So much the better. On a island only eight
square miles (21 square km), everything natural occurs in small doses. From the
compact red-roofed French country homes to the toy airstrip to the dozen-street
capital of Gustavia, the overriding impression is that an island like St. Barts
would sink under extensive growth. Of course, these same Lilliputian qualities
limit that which St. Barts can ever bel; it is an island with few resources
beyond the natural beauty of its billowing hills and comely beaches. It's
economy is, mostly, tourism.
